Abstract
Crossing experiments have been executed between a Mentha rotundifolia population with dihydrocarvone and related compounds in the essential oil and a Mentha longifolia population with piperitoneoxide as main constituent in the essential oil. In agreement with the results of Murray with Mentha spicata the formation of C–2 oxidized compounds is dominant over the formation of C–3 oxidized compounds.
If Mentha spicata is a bastard the presence of carvone and related compounds in the essential oil can thus be explained. One of its supposed parents is a chemovar of Mentha rotundifolia or Mentha longifolia containing an essential oil with carvone or related substances.
